William was born in Larne in 1880 and was a fitter before the war. He married Sarah Jane McKenna and lived at 134 Outran Street, Belfast. They had 8 children but only 3 survived namely William John, Richard and Agnes Bettie. On 17 June 1914 William was remarried to a Mrs Martha McClelland a widow in McQuiston and they lived at 10 Swift Street, Belfast.
William enlisted on 16 February 1915 at the age of 35 years. He was transferred to Newark but died of pneumonia on 3 December 1915. He is buried at the City Cemetery, Belfast. His wife and children received a War Gratuity of £3 and his name is included on the Presbyterian Roll of Honour.
