William George Whitley Service Number 2nd Lieutenant The King’s (Liverpool Regiment) 13th Battalion
George was born of parents Henry and Annie Whitley of Florida, Ardenlee Parade, Belfast.
The McQuiston church magazine in October 1916 records that George had completed his apprenticeship with Messrs. McLean & Son, Solicitors, Belfast and obtained his commission through the Belfast OTC on 25 March 1915.
He was a member of the 19th BB and the Helping Hand Bible Class. He gave an early token of his love for his Master and as a Christian his influence was especially valuable. He was also a member of the Cregagh Cricket and Tennis Clubs. (See further details below)
He served in France and was killed in action leading his men at 5.45pm on 16 August 1916. George is remembered at the Guillemont Road Cemetery, Guillemont, Somme, France.
George’s name is included on the Presbyterian Roll of Honour.
