Stephen Halliday Service Number 5525 Private Royal Irish Rifles 5th Battalion
Stephen was born in 1873 in Newtownards and was a general labourer. According to the 1911 census he could not read and write. His wife was called Caroline, she was aged 38 in 1911 and they were married in 1892. Together they had 13 children but only 6 survived – Mary Jane, Christina, Robert, Josephine, Lucy and David. The family had lived at a number of addresses including 10 Ashfield Street, Ormeau, Belfast, 51 Canton Street, Belfast and finally 62 Douglas Street, Belfast.
Stephen enlisted at the age of 38 years in Newtownards on 18 August 1914. He served for a short time in France but was discharged on medical grounds on 18 March 1916. He was to die on 23 November 1917 aged 44 and is buried at the City Cemetery, Belfast.
Stephen’s name is included on the Presbyterian Roll of Honour.
