Samuel James Ireland 2nd Lieutenant Kings Liverpool Regiment 17th Battalion
Samuel was born in Belfast of John and Sara Ann Ireland who lived at 136 Rugby Avenue, Belfast in 1911. Samuel was the eldest of 5 children namely Samuel, Sarah, John, Emily and William. In 1911 Mr Ireland was recorded as being a carpenter. Sometime later the family moved to 21 Madrid Street, Belfast.
Samuel gained his rank of 2nd Lieutenant on 29 October 1915 and was killed in action on 12 October 1916.
Samuel is commemorated on his parents’ memorial in Knockbreda Cemetery, Belfast and on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. In addition Samuel’s name is also included on the Queen’s University Belfast War Memorial.
Samuel’s name is included on the Presbyterian Roll of Honour.
