Samuel was born in 1891. According to the 1901 census his father was also Samuel aged 85 who was a bookbinder. His mother appears to have been deceased. They had 3 sons namely Samuel, James and Albert. There is a step mother Agnes Kerr. By 1911 Samuel lived at 13 Toronto Street, Belfast, was an apprentice compositor and had 2 step children namely Willena Bannell and Albert Coulter.
Samuel was killed in action on 8 October 1918 and is buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gouy, France
