Samuel Cull Service Number 5214 Private Seaforth Highlanders 6th Battalion (Ross-shire Buffs, the Duke of Albany’s)
Samuel was born on 4 October 1890 in Ballymacarrett, Belfast, along with a twin, Stafford who died in Ohio in 1971 of old age. They were the sons of James and Margaret Cull (nee Hughes) of 158 Beersbridge Road, Belfast. James is recorded as being a carpenter in the 1911 census. They had 13 children albeit only 11 were recorded as alive in 1911.
Samuel married Mary McIlrath on 13 December 1911 in St. Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast. They had one daughter Mary Geraldine McIlrath Cull who was born in 1912 and died in 1992.
Samuel enlisted in 1912 and died of wounds on 8 December 1916 in Flanders, France.
He is buried at the Ovillers Military Cemetery, Somme Region of France about 5KM north-east of the town of Albert.
Samuel’s wife Mary received a War Gratuity of £3.
Samuel’s name is included on the Presbyterian Roll of Honour.
