Lance Corporal Royal Irish Rifles 14th Battalion
James was born in 1893 of parents James and Margaret Cull (nee Hughes) of 158 Beersbridge Road, Belfast. In the 1911 Census of Ireland James was one of 11 living siblings and was employed as a commercial clerk. His father James was a carpenter.
James was a member of the YCV and there is a formal photograph below presumably taken before they left for England and France. He was also a rifleman with the Royal Irish Rifles and was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.
He was reported missing and presumed died on 16 August 1917 and is buried at Tyne Cot Memorial Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium. This is the largest cemetery for Commonwealth forces anywhere in the world for any war.
James’ father received a War Gratuity of £17.
James’ name is included on the Presbyterian Roll of Honour.
