James was born in Glasgow and was the son of Edward and Ellen Jane Currie (nee McKeown). The family home was 8 Frankfort Street, Belfast.
James was married to Sarah and they lived at 14 Canton Street, Belfast.
James enlisted with the Royal Irish Rifles on 5 October 1915 and was posted to France. He was killed in action on 2 July 1916 and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
