James was born in 1887 and was the eldest child of 5 children of Robert and Maggie Close (nee Laynard) of 56 Douglas Street, Belfast. His siblings were Sarah, Mary Jane, Letitia and David. Mr Robert Close was a carter.
James enlisted on 4 October 1915 and was posted to France. He was killed in action on 11 June 1916 and is buried at Authuile Military Cemetery, in the Somme region of France.
His father received a War Gratuity of £4.
James’ name is included on the Presbyterian Roll of Honour.
