Hugh was born on 5 June 1891of parents Hugh and Eliza McConnell, Boardmills, Lisburn. They had 8 children namely Ellen, Robert, Thomas, Jane, Annie, Samuel, Margaret, Hugh and by 1911 were living at 82 Jocelyn Avenue. Belfast.
Hugh married Jane J McConnell and lived at 227 Cregagh Street, Belfast.
He enlisted on 18 September 1914 with the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in Valcartier, Quebec, Canada and is recorded as a labourer.
Died on 11 April 1917 and is remembered at Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
Hugh’s name is included on the Presbyterian Roll of Honour.
