Dawson was born on 13 November 1887 and was the second eldest child of Mr and Mrs Jane Clarke who lived at 8 Mashona Street, Belfast. Dawson had 4 other siblings namely Eliza J, Sarah A, Thomasena and Minnie J. The family previously lived at Lebanon Street, Clifton, Antrim. Dawson married Margaret Victoria McKenna in 1916.
Dawson joined the Royal Navy on 13 November 1905 and served on a number of ships before and during the First World War. His final placement was on HMS Actaeon. He drowned on 14 April 1917 in Belfast harbour whilst attempting to save the life of another person.
Dawson is buried at Dundonald Cemetery.
