Alfred William Ground Service Number 8616 Private Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers 1st Battalion
Alfred, who was born in 1883 in County Armagh of parents Thomas and Eliza Ground (nee McMillan). They had 5 children namely Mary G, Caroline, John, Alfred William and Frederick F.
In 1901 the family lived at 76 Portalloa Street, Belfast. By 1911 Alfred was married and had moved to 50 Newry Street, Belfast with his wife Elizabeth and 2 children Mary and Tom. The 1911 census records Alfred as a fitter. His father the late Mr. Ground was a Q.M.S. Ground, Royal Irish Fusiliers.
Alfred died on 24 June 1915 aged 32 years and is buried at Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France near the Belgium border.
Alfred’s widow Elizabeth received a War Gratuity of £5.
Alfred’s older brother John, a Corporal with the Royal Field Artillery, 105th Battalion also served.
